            Books mature the human mind and guide it to the right path. They are innumerable. Encompassing innumerable concepts. Books are what make us who read with our heads down, walk upright in the society. Palm leaves were the most widely used stationery used for writing such texts. Looking at the names and patterns written on the metal plaques and barks, it is possible to know that the date palm is very ancient. That is, the bark is cut to the size of leaves and written on with holes AD A 1st century copper plate bearing the shape of leaf also confirms that the use of leaf is very ancient. This article highlights the writing style found on such leaves, the centering of the writings on the leaves, the method of building traces, the external structure of the traces, the period of leaf writing, the status of leaves in social use, and the current status of leaf writing.

நூல்கள் மனித மனத்தைப் பக்குவப்படுத்தி நல்வழிக்கு அழைத்துச் செல்வன. அவை எண்ணிலடங்காத. எண்ணிலடங்காத கருத்துகளை உள்ளடக்கித் திகழ்வன. தலைகுனிந்து படிக்கும் நம்மைச் சமுதாயத்தில் தலைநிமிர்ந்து நடக்க வைப்பவை நூல்கள். இத்தகைய நூல்கள் எழுதுவதற்குப் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்ட எழுதுபொருட்களுள் அதிகமாகப் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டவை பனையோலைகள். உலோகங்களில் எழுதப்பட்ட பட்டயங்கள், மரப்பட்டைகள் ஆகியவற்றைக் குறிப்பிடும் பெயர்களையும் வடிவங்களையும் நோக்கும் பொழுது பனையோலையே காலத்தால் மிகவும் பழமையானது என அறியமுடிகிறது. அதாவது ஓலைகளின் அளவுகளிலேயே மரப்பட்டைகள் வெட்டப்பட்டு, துளையிட்டு எழுதப்பட்டதையும் கி.பி. முதலாம் நூற்றாண்டைச் சார்ந்த தாமிரப் பட்டயம் ஓலையின் வடிவத்தைக் கொண்டிருப்பதையும் காணும்போது ஓலையின் பயன்பாடு மிகவும் பழமையானது என்பதை உறுதிசெய்யமுடிகிறது. இத்தகைய ஓலைகளில் அமைந்துள்ள எழுத்தமைவு, ஓலைகளின் எழுத்துகளுக்கு மையிடுதல், சுவடி கட்டும் முறை, சுவடிகளின் புற அமைப்பு முறை, ஓலை எழுதும் காலம், சமூகப் பயன்பாட்டில் ஓலைகளின் நிலை, ஓலை எழுதுதலின் இன்றைய நிலை ஆகியவற்றை எடுத்துக்கூறுவதாக இக்கட்டுரை அமைகிறது.
