Abstract

From time immemorial many literatures have appeared in the Tamil language which is exalted as a theological language.  Among those literatures, devotional literatures originated from the Pallava period.  All religious texts are the key to cultivating human life.  They symbolize the grace of the Lord, the glory of the place where the Lord resides, the natural environment there, and so on.  To that end, the legend of Sundarapandiyam was sung by the poet Anathariyappar on the ancient Tamil city of Madurai.  Sundarapandiyam, a myth that is unknown to many today, is based on the mythological tradition of being full of words and phrases.The study of Sundarapandiyam is aimed at understanding the history of Madurai and contributing to the regularization of human life.

ஆய்வுச்சுருக்கம்

தமிழிலக்கியப் பரப்பில் தோன்றிய இலக்கியங்களில் தொன்ம இலக்கியங்களும் ஒன்றாகும். அத்தொன்ம இலக்கியங்கள் மிகப்பலவாகத் தோன்ற சமய அடியார்களே காரணமாக இருந்தனர். தொன்ம இலக்கியங்கள் தெய்வ நம்பிக்கையினையும், சமய நம்பிக்கையினையும் அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்டு சரியை, கிரியை என்ற இருவகை நெறிகளை வலியுறுத்தி ஆலய வழிபாடு, திருவிழாக்கள், விரதமுறைகள் ஆகியவற்றின் பயனைக் கூறுகின்றன. இம்மை வாழ்வில் ஒழுக்கவுணர்வுகளைத் தூண்டி, மறுமையின் பயனை நுகரச் செய்கின்ற தொன்ம இலக்கியங்களுள் மதுரைத்தலத்தின் மீது பாடப்பட்ட சுந்தரபாண்டியம் எனும் தலபுராணம் குறிப்பிடத்தக்கதாகும். இத்தலபுராணம் மதுரை மாநகரில் சொக்கநாதர் நிகழ்த்திய பல திருவிளையாடல்கள், தலவிசேடம், தீர்த்தச்சிறப்பு, திருவிழாக்கள், இறைவனின் கருணைத்திறம், வீடுபேற்றுக்கு உண்டான நன்னெறிகள், மனித வாழ்வியலுக்குரிய அறங்கள் முதலியவற்றை எடுத்துரைக்கப்பதாக அமைகிறது.
