பயணம் என்பது மனித வாழ்வில் ஓர் இன்றியமையாத பகுதியாகும். மனிதன், என்று ஓர் இடத்தில் இருந்து மற்றொரு இடத்திற்கு இடம் பெயர்ந்து செல்ல தொடங்கினானோ அன்றே பயணம் செல்லுதலும் தொடங்கிவிட்டது. பயணமானது கல்வி, வாணிகம், கூட்டங்களில் பங்கேற்றல், விளையாட்டு, பகை, உறவு, தூது, புதிய இடங்களைக் காணுதல் போன்ற பல சூழ்நிலைகளில் மனிதர்களால் மேற்கொள்ளப்படுகிறது. ஓர் இடத்தில் நிலையாக வசிக்காமல் இடம் விட்டு இடம் பெயர்ந்து, நல்ல உணவையும், பாதுகாப்புடைய உறைவிடத்தையும், வளமுடைய பூமியையும் நாடிச்செல்லும் ஆதி மனிதனியல்பு பல்வகைக் காரணங்களால் இன்றளவும் தொடர்கிறது. பாணர்கள் பரிசில் நாடிச் செல்லக் காரணமாக இருந்தது அவர்களுடைய வறுமையே ஆகும்.  தம் வறுமை தீரப் பொருள் உதவி செய்யும் உள்ளங்களை நாடிச் சென்றனர்.  அவ்வாறு பாடிச் செல்லும் போது வழியில் அவர்கள் கண்ட நானிலத்தைப் பற்றியும் அங்கு  வாழக் கூடிய மக்கள் விலங்குகள் போன்றவற்றையும் அவர்களுடைய வாழ்வியல் கூறுகளைப் பற்றியும் தன் எதிர்ப்பட்ட வறுமை நிலையில் உள்ள பாணனிடம் கூறி ஆற்றுப்படுத்தும் ஒரு பயண  நூல் ஆற்றுப்படை ஆகும்.
