Abstract

Tamil literatures are the historical repository of the lifestyle of ancient Tamil people. In the world of Tamil literature, travel writing has been so popular that compilers of the day included them in their anthologies, Sangam poetry includes a genre known as Aartrupadai, songs in which the persona is a traveler form the past guiding a traveler in the present. He narrates his experience of meeting a benefactor in a foreign land and gives him and his companions many gifts. Five long Sangam poems use this literary technique, one about a pilgrimage to the Muruga temples in the hills, the rest glorifying the munificence of a chieftain. This article expounds the life of ancient Tamil through the   Aattruppadai poems.

ஆய்வுச் சுருக்கம்

  சங்கஇலக்கியம்  பண்டைய தமிழரின் வாழ்வியலை எடுத்துக் கூறும் வரலாற்றுக் களஞ்சியம் ஆகும்.  பத்துப்பாட்டு நூல்களில்  சரிபாதியாக அமைந்துள்ள ஆற்றுப்படை நூல்கள்  ஆற்றுப்படுத்தல் – வழிப்படுத்தல் என்ற அடிப்படையைக் கொண்டது. அவை திருமுருகாற்றுப்படை, பொருநராற்றுப்படை, சிறுபாணாற்றுப் படை, பெரும்பாணாற்றுப்படை, மலைபடுகடாம் (கூத்தராற்றுப்படை) என்பன ஆகும். இவை கருத்திலும் அடியளவு எண்ணிக்கையிலும் சிறந்தும் மிகுந்தும் காணப்படுகின்றன. இவற்றில் 248 அடிகள் (பொருநராற்றுப்படை) குறைந்ததாகவும் 583 அடிகள் (மலைபடுகடாம்) மிகுந்ததாகவும் உள்ளன. இவ்வாற்றுப்படை நூல்கள் தமிழர் வாழ்வியலை அழகுற எடுத்தியம்புகின்றன.
