பண்டைய காலத்தில் கல்வி பயில வேண்டுமாயின் இதற்குச் சிறந்த ஆசான் இவர்தான் என்று ஒவ்வொரு ஆசிரியர்களையும் தேடிச் சென்று இலக்கியத்தையும் இலக்கணத்தையும் பயின்றனர். சங்ககாலத்தில் இயங்கியத் தமிழ்க் கழகம் கூட ஒரு நிறுவனமாக முறையாகச் செயல்பட்டு கற்க வரும் மாணாக்கர்களுக்கும் கற்பிக்கவில்லை. ஆங்கிலேயரின் வருகைக்குப் பின்னர்தான் கல்வி பயில நிறுவனங்கள் அமைத்து, ஒரே இடத்தில் அனைத்தையும் கற்கும் நிலை ஏற்பட்டது. பாடங்களைச் செவிவழியே கேட்டறிந்தாலும் எந்நேரமாயினும் கண்களால் கண்டறிந்து கொள்ளும் முழுமையான ஆவணப் பதிவாக நூல்கள் உள்ளன. ஆழக் கற்றல். விரும்பியன கற்றல், வேண்டிய நேரத்தில் கற்றல், தனித்துக் கற்றல், குழுவாகக் கற்றல் ஆகிய பன்முனைகளில் கற்றல் திறனை மேம்படுத்திக் கொள்ள நூல்கள் காரணியாகின்றன. ஆய்வுப் பலத்தை வலுப்படுத்தும் பணியைத் தொடர்ந்து மேற்கொள்ளவேண்டிய ஏராளமான பணிகள் நிறைவு செய்யப்படாமல் உள்ளதாக நாளிதழ் பதிவுகள் சுட்டுகின்றன. குறிப்பாக இந்து தமிழ் திசை நாளிதழின் தலையங்கக் கட்டுரை 01.07.2017 பல்கலைக்கழக ஆய்வுத் துறைகளை வெகுவாகச் சிந்திக்க வைத்தது. அச்சிந்தனையின் விளைவாக; இவ்வாய்வு மேற்கொள்ளப்பெறுகிறது. ஒரு நாட்டின் அறிவு வளர்ச்சிக்கு ஊற்றாய் விளங்கும் பல்கலைக்கழகங்கள் பல்வேறு பணிகளை இங்கு பணிபுரியும் பேராசிரியர்களும் ஓய்வுபெற்ற புகழ்மிக்கப் பேராசிரியர்களையும் கொண்டு பல்வேறு துறைகளில் சிறந்த நூல்களை வெளியிடுதல், ஆய்வுத் திட்டத்திற்காக ஏடுகளை அச்சிடல், அறிஞர்களின் பேருரைகளை நூல் வடிவமாக்குதல், ஆய்வு முயற்சிகளை ஊக்குவித்தல் எனப் பதிப்பு சார்ந்த பணிகளை மேம்படுத்தி வருகின்றனர். தமிழகப் பல்கலைக்கழகங்களின் பல்வேறு பரிணாமங்களில் பதிப்புத்துறையும் பதிப்புப் பணியும் ஒன்று.  தமிழர் தமிழ்ச் சமுதாயத்தின் பெட்டகமாகக் கருதி பல ஆய்வு நூல்களையும் துறை சார்ந்த நூல்களையும் வெளியிட்டிருக்கின்றன. இதனைத்  தமிழ்ப் பல்கலைக்கழகம் மெய்ப்பித்து வருகிறது.
