Abstract

Dictionaries have a unique place in fulfilling the needs of the time. Foreigners learned the Tamil language and created dictionaries to serve their purpose. They simplified the language. It should have been in Tamil. So dictionaries must have been a great help for them to assimilate the language easily. Therefore, the foreigners should have made the Tamil language easier and given it to their countrymen. Dictionaries were the bridge. These dictionaries later took a variety of forms. It became a separate department. Its founders were Antem de Provenza (1679), Konstantik Pesky (1732), Johann Philipp Fabricius (1779), Johann Christian Breithaupt (1776), John Peter Rattler (1841), Miron Vinculo (1862), Peter Percival (1860), Levi Spalding (1852), Louis Sévanion Dupuis (1850). This article describes their work and background. The Tamil language has been simplified. Their lexicographic work is crucial to the fact that anyone can learn the Tamil language today.
