Paniyars are significant among the tribal communities living in the Nilgiris. Their livelihood has long depended on agriculture. Before the spread of modern technologies, the Banyan people used their traditional knowledge and local resources to develop unique agricultural tools. This article examines in detail the various plant materials used for agriculture by the Nilgiri Paniyar people, their uses, the methods by which they were made, and their significance in the socio-economic context. The paper discusses the transition from nomadic lifestyle to sustainable agriculture, food crops and farming methods, tools used for ploughing, hoes, hoes, harvesting and weeding tools, irrigation and processing tools, and their status in modern society.
